On Friday June 16, 2017 at 7:05 I completed my work. Typically every other Friday, I come in a little later to leave from my office and head straight to attend a church service. Today I was not feeling well so I text my team to inform them they would not be seeing me.
As I wrapped up, I realized my boss was still in, so she stated she would walk out with me and finish up later on. During our conversation she inquired why she was still seeing me and I informed her of my Friday ritual (work late, head to church). We continued our pleasant conversation ran quickly to the lavatory and then caught the elevator.
The Grand Descent
We entered the elevator from the 28th floor once we passed the 20th floor there are no other floors to access until 6. At least that’s what we thought. We abruptly stopped, dropped and my stomach rolled (in that precise order). What does one do when they get stuck on an elevator with their boss? Panic? No. Cry? No. Scream? Although all of the above actions did pass through my mind. ? Well, in situations such as this recognize what you do control. Your response. Your reaction. Your attitude. At first I was a bit dejected, as the security personnel informed us that they had to call the elevator vendor and that they were 20min away. Remember its Friday night. So, at that precise moment, I decided to put on my lipstick and informed my lucky passenger that we were going on Facebook Live. Yep, I’m stuck for 20min and have 20more minutes to go.
There are some life lessons and rules to live by from my unexpected scenario.
No.1 – If you leave work after hours, make sure you visit the lavatory. You never know if you get caught in traffic, or get stuck in an elevator. (no pun intended)
No.2 – Inform your loved ones AND if your building has security personnel know your plans. In our scenario, we were stuck for 1.45 min, which leads us to step no. 3.
No.3 – Have your phone charged. Now, its not a guarantee that phone signals are strong enough to work in an elevator, but in our case we were fortunate. You never want to relay on someone else’s technology. The elevator’s phone system was operable so we were fortunate.
